A2P SMS explained
A2P (application-to-person) SMS is a text message initiated by a business software application — OTPs, notifications, alerts, transactional confirmations and marketing — and delivered to a consumer's mobile phone. It looks identical to person-to-person (P2P) SMS on the handset, but it uses different operator agreements, routes, rate structures and regulation.
Summarised from What is A2P SMS?
How it works
- 1
The application submits the message
An enterprise application calls a CPaaS or SMS API, or holds an SMPP bind, and submits the message — usually with a registered alphanumeric sender ID.

The provider routes it to the operator
The CPaaS routes the message through its SMSC to the destination mobile network operator via SMPP, SS7 or HTTP, over contracted operator-direct routes governed by A2P agreements.

The operator delivers and bills it
The operator's SMSC delivers the message to the handset. A2P termination is a wholesale product with a per-message rate that varies by country and route, and operator firewalls block A2P traffic that arrives disguised as P2P.

A delivery receipt comes back
A delivery receipt (DLR) returns through the same path, so the application knows whether the message reached the handset.

Key terms

- What is A2P SMS?A2P (application-to-person) SMS is a text message initiated by a business software application — for OTPs, notifications, alerts, transactional confirmations, marketing — delivered to a consumer mobile phone.
- A2P vs P2P SMS — what's the difference?P2P (person-to-person) SMS is one mobile subscriber texting another from their dial-pad.
- A2P vs bulk SMS — what's the difference?A2P SMS and bulk SMS overlap but are not the same thing: A2P (application-to-person) describes who sends a message — a software application reaching a person with an OTP, alert, or notification — while bulk SMS…
- What is a grey route in SMS?A grey route is A2P SMS traffic that bypasses the destination operator's official A2P agreement and is delivered through a path priced for P2P or other consumer-class traffic — typically a SIM box, a foreign HLR…
- What is a sender ID?A sender ID is the 'from' identity a recipient sees on an A2P SMS.
- What is a DLR (Delivery Receipt)?A DLR is the asynchronous confirmation that an SMS has been delivered (or failed to deliver) at the handset.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send business messages over P2P routes to save money?
You can technically, and that is precisely what a grey route is — but the destination operator's SMS firewall will classify the pattern (one 'subscriber' sending thousands of messages) and block the route, at which point your delivery collapses without warning. It also breaches interconnect terms and, in most markets, sender-ID and consent regulation. Below-market pricing is the tell.
Read the full answerIs two-way conversational SMS A2P or P2P?
A2P. Even though a human replies to you, the commercial relationship is enterprise: the inbound leg is mobile-originated (MO) but the number is a registered virtual long number or short code, billed and routed as A2P.
Read the full answerWhy does A2P cost more than P2P?
Because A2P termination is a contracted, monetized operator product with reliable, operator-direct delivery and sender-ID handling, whereas P2P is bundled into consumer plans. The premium buys dependable delivery, preserved branding, and regulatory compliance.
Read the full answerIs all bulk SMS also A2P?
Yes. Bulk SMS is sent by an application to many recipients, which is application-to-person by definition. Bulk is a subset of A2P — the high-fan-out, usually-marketing subset.
Read the full answerIs an OTP bulk SMS?
No. An OTP is A2P (sent by your application) but individual, not bulk — it goes to a single recipient in response to a specific event, not as a one-to-many campaign.
