Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.
Short codes
Best for: high-throughput one-to-many campaigns, voting, premium SMS. Recognition: high — short numbers are visibly different from personal contacts and signal "this is a brand." Throughput: 100-500 MPS typical; up to several thousand on premium short codes. Cost: high setup (USD 1,000-5,000/month rental), high per-message in the US, varies in MENA. MO support: usually yes but with operator-specific restrictions on premium billing.
Long codes
Best for: two-way conversational SMS (customer support, appointment confirmations with replies), low-volume A2P. Recognition: low — looks like a personal number. Throughput: 1-10 MPS in most markets (operators throttle long-code A2P aggressively as anti-spam). Cost: low setup (USD 5-50/month rental), low per-message. MO support: always — long codes are the standard for inbound replies.
Where alphanumeric sender IDs fit
In most of MENA, Europe, and APAC, alphanumeric sender IDs (e.g. `BANK-OF-X`) are the dominant A2P pattern — neither short code nor long code, just a string. Pre-registered with the regulator. Cannot receive MO replies. The right choice for transactional A2P in MENA. In the US, alphanumeric sender IDs are not supported — you must use a short code or 10DLC long code.
10DLC — the US special case
The US introduced 10-Digit Long Code (10DLC) registration in 2021 to legitimise A2P long-code usage. Every 10DLC sender must register a brand and a campaign with The Campaign Registry; throughput then scales per the campaign's trust score (1 MPS up to 225 MPS). 10DLC is now the default A2P pattern for US destinations; alphanumeric is not an option. BroadNet handles 10DLC registration for customers sending to the US.
