What is WhatsApp Business API?

Last reviewed 2 min readReviewed by BroadNet engineering
Quick answer

WhatsApp Business API is Meta's enterprise messaging product — a programmatic interface for businesses with more than a few hundred customer conversations per day. Unlike the free WhatsApp Business app (designed for SMEs), the API has no UI: you integrate it into your CRM, support desk, or in-house systems via a Meta-approved Business Solution Provider (BSP).

The long answer

Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.

§01

How it differs from the WhatsApp Business app

The free app is a single-device application that a small business owner runs on their phone. The API is a server-side product: webhook-driven, multi-agent, integrable, and built for volume. The API has a strict template-approval process, per-message template pricing, and a Green Tick verification track that the app does not get.

§02

Why most businesses use a BSP

A business can connect to the WhatsApp Business Platform directly through Meta's Cloud API, or through a Meta-approved Business Solution Provider (BSP) such as BroadNet. Most enterprises choose a BSP for onboarding, template approval, Green Tick verification, billing and support. The BSP manages your phone number's WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), submits templates for Meta approval and provides the API endpoint, webhooks and tooling your code uses. Switching BSPs means migrating the WABA — disruptive but doable.

§03

Per-message pricing

Since 1 July 2025 Meta bills each delivered template message, classified as Marketing, Utility or Authentication, at list rates that Meta sets per market and revises from time to time; BroadNet quotes the current rate for each market you send to. From 1 October 2026 Meta bills replies inside the 24-hour customer service window per message, at the same rate as utility and authentication messages in that market: service replies after a free tier of 1,000 service messages per business phone number per month, utility templates from the first message. Your BSP passes Meta cost through plus a small platform fee.

§04

What templates are and why they matter

Any business-initiated message must use a pre-approved template — a structured message with placeholders, submitted via the API and reviewed by Meta within 24 hours. Templates are categorised at approval; misclassified templates get rejected or auto-recategorised. Get your template strategy right at integration time or you will be reworking them six months in. See /products/whatsapp-business-api for the integration guide.
