Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.
Reach and requirements
SMS reaches any mobile number on any phone with no app. WhatsApp reaches its 2B+ users but needs the app installed, a customer opt-in, and pre-approved templates to initiate. For near-universal reach, SMS still wins. See /answers/what-is-whatsapp-business-api.
Cost models differ
SMS is billed per segment; WhatsApp is billed per delivered template message, with categories (utility, authentication, marketing) priced differently. High-volume one-way alerts often favour SMS; two-way conversations handled inside the 24-hour service window often favour WhatsApp. See /answers/what-is-conversation-pricing-whatsapp and /answers/whatsapp-24-hour-window.
Match the channel to the job
OTP and critical alerts: SMS for reach and speed (with WhatsApp as an option). Conversational support, order updates with media, and marketing: WhatsApp for branding and richness. See /answers/what-is-omnichannel-messaging.
Use both, intelligently
An omnichannel platform lets you send on the preferred channel and fall back automatically — WhatsApp first, SMS if undelivered — so you get WhatsApp's richness without losing SMS's reach. See /products/omnichannel.
