Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.
What each carries
MMS carries a media file and up to ~1,600 characters but no interactivity or branding. RCS carries rich cards, carousels, quick-reply and action buttons, and a verified branded sender — an app-like experience in the native inbox. See /answers/what-is-mms and /answers/what-is-rcs-business-messaging.
Reach and fallback
MMS has near-universal device support but is a heavier, pricier message. RCS needs a supported device and network; where it is unavailable, campaigns fall back to SMS or MMS automatically. See /answers/sms-fallback-strategy.
Branding and trust
RCS senders are verified and display the brand name, logo, and a checkmark, which lifts trust and response over an unbranded MMS from a raw number. See /answers/what-is-verified-sender.
Which to choose
For a one-off image to any handset, MMS still works; for branded, interactive, measurable rich messaging on modern devices, RCS is the upgrade. See /answers/rcs-for-business.
