Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.
How RBM works, end to end
A brand registers an RBM agent, which is verified by the carrier or an aggregator and given a branded sender identity. Messages are submitted over the RBM API to the RCS platform (often Google's Jibe or a carrier hub), delivered to the recipient's Messages app, and — crucially — fall back to SMS automatically when the recipient's device or network doesn't support RCS. See /products/rcs-messaging and /answers/what-is-rcs.
The message types RBM supports
Rich cards (image, title, description, tappable buttons), horizontal carousels of cards, suggested replies and suggested actions (open URL, dial, share location, add to calendar), plus read receipts and typing indicators. Content is far richer than SMS's 160 characters or MMS media. See /answers/what-is-rcs-business-messaging and /answers/rcs-vs-sms.
Verified sender — why it matters
Every RBM agent is verified, so the brand name, logo, and a verification checkmark are cryptographically bound to the sender. The recipient can trust the message is genuinely from the brand — closing the sender-ID spoofing gap that makes SMS a smishing vector. See /answers/what-is-sender-id-spoofing and /answers/what-is-smishing.
Benefits over SMS
Branded, trusted sender identity; app-like interactivity that lifts conversion; read receipts and analytics SMS can't provide; and automatic SMS fallback so you never lose reach. For customer journeys that need buttons, images, and two-way flow without an installed app, RBM is the native upgrade path. See /answers/rcs-vs-whatsapp.
Limitations to plan for
Reach depends on device, OS version, and carrier RCS enablement, so coverage varies by market and you must design an SMS fallback. Agent verification and carrier onboarding take time, and rich features degrade gracefully when the recipient is on an older client. RBM complements, rather than fully replaces, SMS and WhatsApp. See /answers/what-is-ott-bypass.
Does RCS Business Messaging work on iPhone?
Yes — Apple added RCS Universal Profile support in iOS 18 (2024), so iPhones on a carrier with RCS enabled receive RBM messages in the native Messages app. Before that, RBM reached Android only. Because support still varies by device and carrier, a well-built RBM campaign always falls back to SMS for recipients who can't receive RCS. See /answers/rcs-vs-sms.
