This URL is long. Long links eat into your SMS character budget and can push a message into extra segments — each of which is billed. The URL alone is about 1 SMS segment of your 160-character budget.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to BroadNet or any server, and no link is actually shortened here — the URL is assembled locally with the standard WHATWG URL API.

The short answer

What is a UTM tracking URL?

A UTM tracking URL is a normal landing-page link with extra query parameters — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and optionally utm_term and utm_content — appended to the end. Analytics platforms read those parameters to attribute a visit, sign-up or sale to the exact campaign, channel and creative that drove it. For SMS and messaging campaigns, consistent UTM tags are the difference between “messaging drove some traffic” and knowing precisely which broadcast converted.

How to tag an SMS campaign link

Start with the landing page you're sending recipients to. Set utm_source to the platform the click originates from (sms, whatsapp, rcs), utm_medium to the channel category, and utm_campaign to a unique, human-readable campaign name. Keep every value lowercase and hyphenated — analytics tools are case-sensitive, so “Spring-Sale” and “spring-sale” become two separate rows and split your numbers. Use utm_content to A/B two links in the same message, and utm_term for a paid keyword or audience. Because messages are billed per segment, keep the final URL short: a long tracking link can quietly tip a one-part SMS into two.

Frequently asked questions

Why should UTM values be lowercase and hyphenated?

Analytics platforms treat UTM parameters as case-sensitive strings. “Spring Sale”, “spring sale” and “spring-sale” are three different campaigns as far as the report is concerned, so your traffic gets split across several rows and every total is wrong. Sticking to lowercase-with-hyphens keeps each campaign a single, clean line. The Auto-clean toggle above does this for you.

Do long tracking URLs cost more in SMS?

Indirectly, yes. SMS is billed per segment — 160 characters in GSM-7 or 70 in Unicode. A long UTM-tagged link consumes part of that budget, and once your message plus the link exceeds one segment you pay for two or more. Shortening the link (for example with BroadNet's b1.lc) reclaims those characters. Use the SMS Segment Calculator to see the exact impact of your full message.

What if my landing page already has a query string?

No problem. If your URL already contains a “?” (for example a product ID), the UTM parameters are appended with “&” instead, so the existing parameters are preserved. This tool detects that automatically and assembles a valid URL either way.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Only utm_campaign is strictly required for this tool to produce a useful link, because it names the campaign. In practice utm_source and utm_medium are strongly recommended too — most analytics platforms need a source/medium pair to attribute a session properly. utm_term and utm_content are optional and used for paid keywords and creative-level A/B testing.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The entire tool runs in your browser using the standard URL API. Nothing you type — landing pages, campaign names, anything — is transmitted to BroadNet or any third party, and no link is actually shortened on a server. You can even use it offline once the page has loaded.

How is this different from a link shortener?

This builder only assembles and encodes the tracking URL; it does not create a short redirect. A shortener like BroadNet's b1.lc takes that long tagged URL and issues a compact branded link that redirects to it — which is what you actually want to put in an SMS to save characters. Build the tagged URL here, then shorten it there.

Send campaigns that you can actually measure.

Tag the link here, shorten it with b1.lc to save SMS segments, and send at carrier scale over BroadNet's messaging platform. Talk to our team about routing, short links and attribution.
