e see this pattern weekly: customers send 1M-recipient campaigns, and 12–22% of the messages fail with "undelivered — invalid MSISDN." They paid for those sends anyway — submission is the billable event for most A2P operators.
The fix
Before sending, scrub the list with HLR Lookup. BroadNet's HLR Lookup costs ~$0.003 per check; a typical SMS costs $0.04. Scrubbing 1M recipients pays for itself if it removes 5%+ invalid numbers — which it almost always does.
What HLR Lookup tells you
- Whether the MSISDN is currently active.
- The current operator (after port-outs).
- The original operator (what the prefix says).
- Country and MCC/MNC.
When NOT to use HLR Lookup
Transactional sends to a small set of recipients (OTPs, alerts) don't benefit much — the per-message overhead doesn't amortize over enough messages. HLR is for batch campaigns, not for triggered transactional traffic.
