What is a silent SMS?

Last reviewed 1 min readReviewed by BroadNet engineering
Quick answer

A silent SMS — formally a Type 0 short message — is a text that a phone must acknowledge to the network but then discards without displaying it or alerting the user. Networks use it to check that a handset is reachable; it can also be abused to track a device, which is why operators screen unsolicited Type 0 traffic.

The long answer

Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.

§01

How does a silent SMS work?

The sender sets the message's protocol identifier (TP-PID) to Type 0, as defined in 3GPP TS 23.040. The handset receives it, returns an acknowledgement to the network and drops the content. Nothing appears in the inbox and no tone plays, but the delivery is recorded by the network, which confirms that the phone is switched on and attached to a particular cell.

§02

Is a silent SMS the same as a flash SMS?

No. A flash SMS (message class 0) is shown on the screen immediately and is not stored in the inbox — the user sees it. A silent SMS is never shown at all. Both are set in the message header, but they serve opposite purposes.

§03

Why do operators screen silent SMS?

A Type 0 message reveals that a device is active without its owner knowing, so it can be used to follow someone's presence on the network or to probe numbers before an attack. Operators therefore treat unsolicited Type 0 messages — especially those arriving from foreign or untrusted sources — as a screening category in their SMS firewall policy, alongside spoofed senders and grey-route traffic.

§04

Do businesses need silent SMS?

Legitimate A2P messaging has little use for it. A business that wants to know whether a number is valid and reachable uses an HLR or number lookup, which queries the network directly without sending anything to the subscriber's handset.
