Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.
What a short code is for
Short codes suit high-throughput, high-trust use cases — OTP at scale, keyword campaigns, alerts — where you need capacity and a recognizable number the operators have vetted. See /answers/what-is-short-code and /answers/what-is-short-code-vs-long-code.
The application process
You apply (through BroadNet as your provider) with your brand identity, the exact use case, sample message flows, and opt-in details. Operators review and provision the code, which is why lead times are measured in weeks, not minutes.
Short code vs the alternatives
If you do not need a short code's throughput, a registered alphanumeric sender ID (for one-way branded SMS) or a long/toll-free number (for two-way at lower volume) provisions faster and costs less. See /answers/what-is-long-code and /answers/what-is-toll-free-messaging.
Keep it compliant
Short codes are closely monitored: sending content that does not match the approved use case, or messaging without opt-in, risks suspension. Classify and consent correctly. See /answers/sms-compliance-checklist.
