he simplest way to have mobile data from the moment you land for Umrah or Hajj is a travel eSIM installed before you fly: it gives you data on Saudi networks while your home SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank OTP text messages. One caveat matters: the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's data-free Nusuk access is announced for SIM cards within the Kingdom from STC, Mobily and Zain, so do not assume it covers a travel eSIM.
This is a connectivity and logistics guide only. For permits, visas and ritual guidance, follow the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and your licensed travel provider. Product details were checked on triposim.com and official Saudi pages on 26 September 2026 and can change.
Key takeaways
- Install your eSIM at home: TripoSIM's own Saudi page advises that during Hajj season you should install before flying because airport SIM vendors are overwhelmed.
- A data-only eSIM keeps your home number working on your primary SIM, so bank OTPs and family calls still reach you — check your home operator's roaming charges for receiving texts.
- The Umrah permit is issued through the Nusuk app and website, free of charge, according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
- Data-free Nusuk access applies to SIM cards within the Kingdom from STC, Mobily and Zain (ministry announcement of 6 August 2025); a travel eSIM may count Nusuk against your data.
- Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked; on an iPhone, look for "No SIM Restrictions" in Settings.
Can I use an eSIM for Umrah and Hajj?
Yes. We found no official restriction on using a travel eSIM in Saudi Arabia, and TripoSIM's Saudi Arabia plans connect to local networks such as stc and Zain, with 5G on some plans and 4G/LTE on others. TripoSIM's destination page describes 5G coverage in Makkah, Madinah and Riyadh and an Arabic-speaking support team. The eSIM is delivered as a QR code by e-mail, and the validity countdown starts when you first use data on it, not when you buy or install it — so you can set everything up calmly before departure.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Most recent phones do. Apple lists iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or later for eSIM, and says the iPhone cannot be locked to a carrier: check Settings > General > About and look for "No SIM Restrictions". On Google Pixel phones, eSIM is under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. TripoSIM's FAQ notes that most phones released after 2018 support eSIM — including iPhone XR/XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer and Google Pixel 3a and newer — and that the phone must be unlocked. If you are unsure, use the device checker on triposim.com before you buy. For the technology behind it, see what an eUICC is and how eSIM provisioning interfaces work.
eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming for pilgrims
| Travel eSIM (TripoSIM) | Saudi visitor SIM | Home-operator roaming | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When you set it up | At home, by scanning a QR code | On arrival, at an operator outlet or kiosk | Before departure, with your home operator |
| Your home number | Stays active on your primary SIM | Replaced if you swap the physical SIM | Stays active |
| Networks | Local networks such as stc and Zain | The issuing Saudi operator | Your operator's roaming partners |
| Data-free Nusuk (per ministry) | Not stated — assume data is used | Covered for STC, Mobily and Zain SIMs within the Kingdom | Not stated |
| Top-up | From your TripoSIM dashboard on qualifying plans | Operator recharge | Your operator's add-ons |
| Hotspot | Supported on most plans | Check the package | Check your plan |
| Watch out for | Phone must support eSIM and be unlocked | ID requirements and queues in peak season | Roaming charges |
Saudi operators sell dedicated visitor packages — Zain even has a Hajj and Umrah page — so a local SIM is a sound choice if you want a Saudi number or plan a long stay. The eSIM route wins on convenience: no queue on arrival, your home number untouched, and data working as soon as you land.
How much data do I need for Umrah or Hajj?
It depends less on the length of the trip than on how you use the phone. Maps, ride-hailing, permit apps and messaging are light; video calls home and sharing videos are heavy. TripoSIM's Saudi plans run from a 1 GB, 7-day plan to 50 GB over 90 days, plus Unlimited day plans that give 1 GB a day at full speed and then continue at 512 kbps — enough for messaging and maps once the daily allowance is used. Plans start from US$2.50 on the site. If you are unsure, TripoSIM's trip planner on triposim.com estimates the data for your trip, and you can top up from the dashboard rather than buying too much up front.
- Mostly messaging, maps and permits: a small fixed plan, topped up if needed.
- Daily video calls with family: an Unlimited day plan or a larger fixed plan.
- Sharing data with a travelling companion: pick a plan with hotspot and more data.
Is the Nusuk app free to use without data?
Partly, and with a condition. On 6 August 2025 the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced that, in cooperation with STC, Mobily and Zain, the Nusuk app's features can be used without consuming internet data by "users of SIM cards within the Kingdom, including citizens, residents, and visitors" — covering permits for the Rawdah, Haramain train booking, Nusuk maps, the Nusuk AI feature, and reports and inquiries. The announcement does not mention roaming or travel eSIMs, so on a TripoSIM eSIM budget for Nusuk as normal data use. The Umrah permit itself is issued through the Nusuk app and website, free of charge.
Can I receive bank OTPs from home while in Saudi Arabia?
Usually yes, if you keep your home SIM active. A data-only eSIM does not replace your number: TripoSIM notes that your existing number on your primary SIM continues to work for calls and SMS. Set the eSIM as your data line and leave the home line on for calls and texts — with data roaming switched off on the home line so you do not pay for data twice. Receiving SMS abroad may carry roaming charges depending on your home operator, so check before you travel. Apple also notes that FaceTime and iMessage continue to work on your home line when you add a travel eSIM.
Some banks no longer send one-time passwords by SMS at all — UAE banks moved customers to in-app approval, for example. Before you fly, open your banking app and confirm how it approves payments abroad. Our guide to SMS OTP after the bank rule changes explains what changed and where.
Staying reachable for family
- Share your home number and your messaging-app contact before you leave; with a data-only eSIM your number does not change.
- Test a voice and video call on your messaging app on arrival, over the eSIM's data, before you rely on it.
- Agree a fallback — a plain SMS to your home number — for moments when data is congested in crowded areas.
- Keep a power bank: navigation and hotspot use drain batteries quickly in heat.
Umrah season 1448 AH and Hajj 2027 dates
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's Umrah season calendar for 1448 AH, published on 17 May 2026, started the season on 31 May 2026 and sets the final Umrah visa issuance on 9 March 2027 (1 Shawwal 1448), the last entry on 23 March 2027 and the last departure on 7 April 2027. Hajj 1448 AH falls in Dhu al-Hijjah and is expected around mid-May 2027; the exact dates depend on the sighting of the moon and are announced by the Saudi authorities, so book connectivity to your confirmed travel dates rather than an estimate.
Pre-travel connectivity checklist
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
- Buy the eSIM for your travel dates and install it at home over Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code; the plan's validity starts on first data use.
- Label the lines (for example "Home" and "Travel"), set the travel eSIM for mobile data, and keep the home line on for calls and SMS with data roaming off.
- Ask your home operator what receiving SMS abroad costs, and confirm how your bank approves payments while you travel.
- Install the Nusuk app and your airline, maps and messaging apps before departure.
- On landing, switch on the eSIM line and data roaming for that line only, then test data and a messaging call.
- Top up from the dashboard if you run low, rather than buying a new SIM in a queue.
For Hajj and Umrah travel agencies
Agencies can bundle connectivity into packages. TripoSIM runs an affiliate programme, a white-label programme for travel agencies and tour operators to offer eSIM under their own brand, and an API for apps and platforms that want to embed eSIM purchase. See TripoSIM for the programmes and our broader travel eSIM guide. Agencies that message pilgrims — booking confirmations, group meeting points, flight changes — can do it over A2P SMS and the WhatsApp Business API with BroadNet's direct routes into Saudi Arabia; the Saudi sender-ID rules apply.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an eSIM for Umrah or Hajj?
Yes. There is no official restriction we could find, and travel eSIMs such as TripoSIM's Saudi Arabia plans run on local networks including stc and Zain. Install it before you fly — TripoSIM advises this specifically for Hajj season — and keep your home SIM for calls and SMS.
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
On an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later, check Settings > General > About for "No SIM Restrictions"; on a Pixel, look under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. The phone must be carrier-unlocked. TripoSIM's site has a device checker by brand and model.
How much data do I need for Umrah?
It depends on your use: messaging, maps and permit apps need little, while daily video calls need much more. TripoSIM's Saudi plans range from 1 GB for 7 days to 50 GB for 90 days, plus Unlimited day plans with 1 GB a day at full speed; its trip planner estimates your need and you can top up later.
Is the Nusuk app zero-rated?
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced on 6 August 2025 that Nusuk's features can be used without consuming data by users of SIM cards within the Kingdom from STC, Mobily and Zain, including visitors. It does not mention travel eSIMs or roaming, so assume Nusuk uses data on an eSIM.
Can I receive bank OTPs from home while in Saudi Arabia?
Yes, if your home SIM stays active: a data-only eSIM keeps your home number working for calls and SMS. Your home operator may charge for receiving texts abroad, and some banks now approve payments in their app instead of by SMS, so check both before you travel.
Should I choose a local SIM, an eSIM or roaming?
A travel eSIM is the most convenient: set up at home, no arrival queue, home number untouched. A Saudi visitor SIM gives you a local number and, per the ministry, data-free Nusuk. Roaming is simplest but usually the most expensive; compare your operator's rates.
When does the eSIM validity start?
According to TripoSIM's FAQ, the validity countdown begins when you first use data on the eSIM, not when you purchase or install it, so you can install it days before departure.
When is Hajj 2027?
Hajj 1448 AH is expected around mid-May 2027, but the dates depend on the moon sighting and are confirmed by the Saudi authorities. For Umrah, the ministry's 1448 AH calendar sets the last entry on 23 March 2027 and the last departure on 7 April 2027.
