What is an SMS blast?

Last reviewed 1 min readReviewed by BroadNet engineering
Quick answer

An SMS blast is a single message sent to a large list of recipients at once — a broad announcement, alert, or promotion. It is the simplest form of bulk messaging, but 'blast' also carries a warning: sending the same message to everyone regardless of consent, segment, or timing wastes spend and hurts deliverability. Effective bulk sending is targeted and consented, not indiscriminate.

The long answer

Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.

§01

Blast vs targeted bulk

A true blast sprays one message to the whole list; better practice segments the audience and tailors timing and content. The mechanics are the same bulk pipeline, but relevance drives results. See /answers/what-is-bulk-messaging and /answers/how-to-send-bulk-sms.

§02

The consent and deliverability trap

Blasting unconsented or stale numbers breaches regulation and tanks your delivery rate and sender reputation. Send only to opted-in recipients and validate the list first. See /answers/sms-opt-in-best-practices and /products/hlr-lookup.

§03

When a broad send is right

Genuine one-to-all alerts — an outage notice, an emergency — are legitimate blasts. For marketing, segment instead. See /answers/sms-marketing-best-practices.
