How do I send international SMS?

Last reviewed 1 min readReviewed by BroadNet engineering
Quick answer

To send SMS internationally, format every number in full E.164 form (a plus sign, country code, and national number), send through a provider with direct routes to your destination countries, register a sender ID where the market requires it, and account for per-country pricing and content rules. The hard part is not the API call — it is route quality and compliance, which vary sharply from one country to the next.

The long answer

Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.

§01

Format numbers as E.164

International delivery depends on fully-qualified numbers: a leading plus, the country code, then the subscriber number, with no spaces or leading zeros. Validate and normalise your list first — an HLR lookup also tells you the current operator and whether the number is reachable. See /answers/what-is-e164 and /products/hlr-lookup.

§02

Route quality decides delivery

The same message can deliver flawlessly to one country and vanish in another depending on whether your provider holds a direct A2P agreement there. Confirm the route to each priority country is direct, not a grey route. See /answers/what-is-grey-route-sms and /answers/how-to-choose-sms-provider.

§03

Sender IDs and content rules differ by market

Many countries require alphanumeric sender IDs to be pre-registered, and some restrict content or mandate local templates. Lead times and rules vary, so plan per-market. See /answers/how-to-register-sender-id and the /regulations guides.

§04

Pricing varies by destination

Each country's operator sets its own A2P termination fee, so per-message cost can vary by an order of magnitude between destinations. Compare cost per delivered message, not headline rate. See /answers/sms-pricing-explained.
