How do I improve SMS delivery rates?

Last reviewed 1 min readReviewed by BroadNet engineering
Quick answer

Improve SMS delivery rates by sending over direct operator routes, registering your alphanumeric sender IDs, cleaning recipient lists with HLR lookups, using correct GSM-7/Unicode encoding, and monitoring delivery receipts so you catch and re-route failures fast. Most chronic delivery problems trace back to two causes: grey routes that firewalls block, and unregistered sender IDs that operators drop before the message ever reaches a handset.

The long answer

Everything worth knowing, nothing that isn't.

§01

Send over direct routes

Grey routes deliver erratically — fine one week, mostly blocked the next as SMS firewalls fingerprint them. Direct A2P routes are the foundation of a stable delivery rate. See /answers/what-is-grey-route-sms and /operators.

§02

Register your sender IDs

In most regulated markets an unregistered alphanumeric sender ID is dropped by the operator firewall, so the message is billed but never delivered. Register in every market you target and classify traffic correctly. See /answers/how-to-register-sender-id.

§03

Clean the list with HLR lookups

Invalid, inactive, or ported numbers depress your delivery rate and waste spend. An HLR lookup confirms a number is live and identifies its current operator before you send. See /products/hlr-lookup and /answers/what-is-mnp.

§04

Get the encoding right

An unintended Unicode character silently cuts the segment limit and can trip content filters. Confirm GSM-7 where possible and validate segmentation before a large send. See /answers/what-is-encoding-gsm-7-ucs-2 and /tools/sms-segment-calculator.

§05

Monitor DLRs and act on them

Watch operator-level delivery receipts, alert on drops in success rate by country and network, and re-route through failover when a path degrades. See /answers/what-is-dlr and /answers/what-is-route-failover.
