ITU-T E.164 · runs in your browser

Enter a number and its country to normalize it to E.164 (the +CCNSN form APIs expect), see the national and international display forms, and run a length plausibility check against the national numbering plan. Nothing leaves your device.

Type it however you have it — with spaces, a leading 0, 00, or a +. The formatter strips the trunk / international prefix and rebuilds it from the country code.

E.164

+971500000000

International

+971 500 000 000

National

0500 000 000

National number is 9 digits — within the expected 9 for United Arab Emirates.

Total 12 digits — within the E.164 maximum of 15.

Length is an indicative plausibility check against the national numbering plan, not a live line-status lookup. For real reachability use an HLR lookup.

The short answer

## What is E.164 format?

E.164 is the ITU-T recommendation that defines the international public telephone numbering plan. An E.164 number is written as a plus sign, then the country calling code, then the national significant number, with no spaces or punctuation — for example +97150XXXXXXX. The whole number is at most 15 digits. Messaging and voice APIs almost always expect destination numbers in E.164, which is why normalising to it before you send avoids a whole class of delivery failures.

### National, international and E.164

| Format | Example (UAE mobile) | Use |
|---|---|---|
| National | 050 000 0000 | How a local subscriber dials it (with trunk 0). |
| International | +971 50 000 0000 | Human-readable cross-border display. |
| E.164 | +971500000000 | The canonical API / database form — no spaces. |

The country table in this tool is a curated subset covering the GCC, wider MENA region and major global markets. National number lengths are indicative of the numbering plan and can vary by line type, so the length check flags likely problems rather than certifying a number as live.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is E.164 and why do APIs require it?**

E.164 is the ITU-T international numbering plan: a + followed by the country calling code and the national significant number, up to 15 digits, with no spaces. Messaging and voice APIs use it because it is globally unambiguous — the same number can't be confused between countries — so normalising to E.164 before sending removes a common source of delivery errors.

**What is the difference between a trunk prefix and a country code?**

A trunk prefix (often 0) is a national dialling prefix used only when dialling within a country; it is dropped in international format. A country code (the calling code) identifies the country in international dialling. To build E.164 you remove any trunk 0 and prepend the country code with a +.

**Does a valid length mean the number is real?**

No. This tool checks that the national number has a plausible length for the selected country's numbering plan. It cannot tell you whether the number is assigned, active or reachable — for that you need an HLR lookup or number-intelligence service.

**Why is the country list limited?**

It is a deliberately curated subset covering the GCC, wider MENA region and major global markets, with numbering-plan lengths we can state factually. A full E.164 validator with per-type rules (like libphonenumber) is a larger dataset; this tool focuses on fast, honest normalisation for the most common destinations.

**How many digits can an E.164 number have?**

At most 15 digits in total, including the country calling code, per ITU-T Recommendation E.164. The national significant number therefore has fewer digits available in countries with longer country codes.
