The short version

Buying enterprise messaging is easy to get wrong because every provider looks similar on a landing page. The differences that decide whether a project succeeds — real coverage on your destinations, honest routing, compliance for each market, and support when a route degrades — only surface if you ask for them deliberately. This guide gives you a requirements-first structure: start from your own use cases and volumes, then work outward through coverage, deliverability, compliance, security and commercial terms, scoring each provider on evidence rather than promises.

The checklist

## Work through it, tick as you go.

01

### Define requirements before you shortlist

A clear brief turns vague 'send SMS' into criteria you can score. Write this down first.

- List your use cases by traffic class: OTP/verification, transactional alerts, marketing, two-way support. Each class has different latency, routing and compliance needs — don't buy one route for all of them.
- Quantify volume and peak: messages/month, peak messages/second, and seasonal spikes. Peak TPS, not monthly total, sizes the commercial and technical fit.
- Name your actual destination markets and rank them by volume. A global coverage headline is meaningless; you care about your top destinations.
- Decide the channels you need now and next: SMS, OTP/verify, WhatsApp, RCS, voice, email. Buying one vendor for several channels only helps if each channel is genuinely strong.
- Capture integration constraints: REST vs SMPP, existing CPaaS, in-house vs managed. High-volume, latency-sensitive traffic often wants a direct SMPP bind.

02

### Coverage & routing quality

The single biggest driver of real-world outcomes — and the hardest to see in a demo.

- Ask for coverage and route type on your ranked destinations specifically, not a country count.
- Confirm direct operator connections vs. reliance on downstream aggregators per market. Direct binds mean fewer hops, better deliverability and cleaner delivery receipts.
- Require a stated policy against grey routes and SIM-farm termination, in the contract.
- Ask how routes fail over and how route changes are communicated to you.
- Insist on per-country / per-operator delivery and latency reporting backed by DLRs.

03

### Deliverability & sender identity

- Check sender-ID support per market: alphanumeric, short code, long number, and registration handling.
- Confirm the provider manages sender-ID / template pre-registration where the market requires it. Unregistered senders are silently dropped in a growing list of countries.
- Verify two-way / MO support where you need replies or keyword handling.
- Ask for independent deliverability testing support (test numbers, third-party monitors).

04

### Compliance, privacy & trust

- Data-protection posture: GDPR and regional privacy alignment, plus data-residency options.
- Security certifications and a completed vendor security review (e.g. ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II).
- Standards and industry alignment (GSMA, MEF Code of Conduct for A2P SMS).
- Fraud controls: AIT / SMS-pumping detection and how they protect you from artificial traffic.
- Consent and opt-out handling appropriate to each market's rules.

05

### Reliability, security & SLAs

- Published uptime SLA with credits and a public status page with incident history.
- Platform redundancy and geo-failover architecture described concretely.
- Throughput guarantees at your peak TPS, with documented behaviour at the ceiling.
- Transport security: TLS for REST, SMPP-over-TLS or IP allow-listing for binds, signed webhooks.

06

### Integration & developer experience

- Clean REST API plus SMPP for high volume, with SDKs in your stack's languages.
- Test access with real credentials on the production API, and a way to test webhooks, before you commit.
- Documentation quality: quickstarts, an error-code reference, and webhook signature verification.
- Safe-retry support (a message ID and status lookup for every send) and clear retry / rate-limit semantics to prevent double-sends.
- Observability: message logs, DLR streams and exportable analytics.

07

### Commercial terms & scoring the decision

- Pricing transparency: per-destination rates, minimums and how surcharges are disclosed. Confirm whether pricing is per message or per segment, and how concatenated messages are billed.
- Contract flexibility: no lock-in, and portability of sender IDs and templates on exit.
- Support model: response SLAs by severity, named contacts and 24/7 for production.
- Onboarding and migration help from your incumbent, with a rollback plan.
- Score each provider against the sections above and weight by your use case before deciding.
