Case study · MENA operator October 2024 · Egypt

In October 2024, e& Egypt — the Egyptian arm of e& (formerly Etisalat Group) — announced an _exclusive A2P SMS partnership_ with BroadNet Technologies, delivered through BroadNet's machine-learning SMS firewall. The announcement was carried by Khaleej Times, Gulf News, Telecompaper and MEA Tech Watch, with on-camera coverage by Khaleej Times and Gulf News on the same day.

On the record

> “We are thrilled to join forces with e& Egypt to shape the future of telecommunications with AI-driven messaging solutions.”

The challenge

## A2P revenue versus grey routes.

Like every tier-1 MNO in MENA, e& Egypt operates a high-value A2P SMS estate. Enterprise senders — banks, fintech, logistics, e-commerce — depend on the network for delivery of OTPs, transactional confirmations and marketing alerts.

That same surface is the target of grey-route aggregators, SIM-box origination, sender-ID spoofing and SMS phishing. Each of these patterns leaks revenue away from the operator while degrading the trust enterprises place in their A2P channel.

Solving it requires a firewall that runs at line rate, learns from real network telemetry rather than a static rule pack, and integrates cleanly with the operator's SMSC and SS7 edge — without changing the operator's commercial relationships with its enterprise customers.

The solution

## Machine-learning SMS firewall, deployed exclusively.

### Machine-learning fraud detection

Transcript-level signal extraction, behavioural fingerprinting and sender-ID anomaly detection — running per inbound A2P submission, sub-second.

### Operator-grade firewall in front of the SMSC

Transparent SMPP front-end. Preserves message ordering, DLR pass-through and CDR semantics. No SMSC config change required.

### Real-time analytics for fraud + revenue teams

Per-bind, per-sender-ID, per-route dashboards. Operators see the leakage shape in their own data, with audit-grade exports.

### Exclusive A2P scope

Partnership announced as exclusive for A2P SMS services through the firewall — surfaced by every outlet that covered it.

Architecture & integration

## In-line with the SMSC, invisible to the sender.

The firewall is deployed as a transparent SMPP layer between the operator's upstream aggregator binds and the SMSC. Enterprise senders keep the same bind parameters, sender IDs and DLR contract they had before cut-over — the difference is that every submission is now scored, classified and either passed, throttled or blocked before it reaches the SMSC.

Because the layer is transparent, integration did not require the operator to re-provision enterprise accounts or change CDR generation. Delivery receipts flow back on the existing path with the original operator timestamp preserved, so billing reconciliation and revenue-assurance reporting keep working unchanged.

Submission path

1. 1 Enterprise / aggregator submit OTP, transactional and marketing A2P arrives over the operator's existing SMPP binds — no change to sender configuration.
2. 2 Firewall inspection Sender-ID validation against the registry, behavioural fingerprinting and ML fraud scoring run per message, sub-second.
3. 3 Policy decision Pass, throttle or block. Grey-route and spoofed-header traffic is stopped before it can leak revenue or reach a subscriber.
4. 4 SMSC + delivery Legitimate traffic is handed to the SMSC in original order; DLRs return on the existing path with the operator timestamp intact.
5. 5 Analytics + audit Every decision is written to per-bind, per-sender-ID and per-route dashboards with audit-grade exports for fraud and revenue teams.

The results

## Leakage becomes visible, then closed.

The first outcome of any firewall cut-over is visibility. Before the deployment, grey-route origination and sender-ID abuse are invisible in the operator's own reporting — the revenue simply never arrives. With the firewall in line, every rejected submission is classified and counted, so the fraud and revenue-assurance teams see the shape of the leakage in their own dashboards for the first time.

From there the objective is zero leakage on the A2P estate: spoofed sender IDs are dropped, grey-route traffic is forced back onto contracted paths, and OTP-abuse patterns are throttled before they can be monetised by a third party. The enterprise experience is unchanged — legitimate OTPs and transactional messages continue to land sub-second — while the revenue that used to leak now terminates on the operator's own commercial routes.

Because the partnership is exclusive for A2P SMS through the firewall, there is no bypass path left open: 100% of the enterprise messaging surface is inspected, so the analytics represent the whole estate rather than a sampled subset. Specific per-traffic figures remain with e& Egypt; the architecture above is the category-level read of how the outcome is produced.

> “BroadNet's advanced technology offers real-time monitoring, fraud detection, and detailed traffic analytics — enabling both enterprises and operators to streamline operations and maximise efficiency.”
