# What is Wangiri fraud?

> Wangiri (Japanese for 'one ring and cut') is a voice fraud in which scammers place brief missed calls from premium-rate international numbers, hoping victims call back and get charged high per-minute fees the fraudster shares in. An SMS variant lures the call-back with a text. Defences include call-pattern analytics, premium-rate destination blocking, and subscriber education.
