# Two-factor authentication vs multi-factor authentication — what's the difference?

> Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires exactly two independent factors to verify identity; multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires two or more. So 2FA is a specific case of MFA. Both combine factor types — something you know (password), something you have (a phone or passkey), something you are (biometric) — and messaging channels commonly deliver the 'something you have' factor as an OTP or a network check.

## The relationship

MFA is the umbrella term for using more than one factor; 2FA is MFA with exactly two. Every 2FA setup is MFA, but MFA can add a third factor for higher assurance. See /answers/what-is-2fa.

## The factor types

Knowledge (password, PIN), possession (a phone receiving an OTP, a passkey, a hardware key), and inherence (fingerprint, face). Strong MFA mixes types rather than stacking two of the same. See /answers/what-is-otp.

## Where messaging fits

SMS, voice, WhatsApp OTP and silent network authentication deliver the possession factor. For the highest assurance, a phishing-resistant factor (passkey) leads, with a phone factor for recovery and reach. See /answers/best-channel-for-otp and /answers/what-is-silent-network-auth.
