# What is transactional SMS?

> Transactional SMS is a message triggered by a user's action or account and essential to a service — an OTP, an order confirmation, a fraud alert, a delivery update. It carries no marketing, is usually exempt from marketing-consent rules (though still regulated), and is routed on high-priority, reliable paths because its value depends on arriving immediately. It is the opposite of promotional SMS.
