# What is STIR/SHAKEN?

> STIR/SHAKEN is a framework of IETF and ATIS standards that cryptographically signs the calling number on a VoIP call so terminating carriers can verify the caller ID has not been spoofed. STIR (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited) defines the signed PASSporT token; SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) defines how carriers apply it. It is mandated for US and Canadian carriers to fight illegal caller-ID spoofing and robocalls. See /answers/what-is-cli and /answers/what-is-sender-id-spoofing.
