# Short code vs long code — when to use each

> A short code is a 3-6 digit number leased from a country regulator/operator for high-volume A2P SMS (typically marketing campaigns, voting, donations). A long code is a regular 10-12 digit MSISDN used for two-way conversational SMS or low-volume A2P. They differ in cost, throughput, MO capability, and consumer recognition.

## Short codes

Best for: high-throughput one-to-many campaigns, voting, premium SMS. Recognition: high — short numbers are visibly different from personal contacts and signal "this is a brand." Throughput: 100-500 MPS typical; up to several thousand on premium short codes. Cost: high setup (USD 1,000-5,000/month rental), high per-message in the US, varies in MENA. MO support: usually yes but with operator-specific restrictions on premium billing.

## Long codes

Best for: two-way conversational SMS (customer support, appointment confirmations with replies), low-volume A2P. Recognition: low — looks like a personal number. Throughput: 1-10 MPS in most markets (operators throttle long-code A2P aggressively as anti-spam). Cost: low setup (USD 5-50/month rental), low per-message. MO support: always — long codes are the standard for inbound replies.

## Where alphanumeric sender IDs fit

In most of MENA, Europe, and APAC, alphanumeric sender IDs (e.g. `BANK-OF-X`) are the dominant A2P pattern — neither short code nor long code, just a string. Pre-registered with the regulator. Cannot receive MO replies. The right choice for transactional A2P in MENA. In the US, alphanumeric sender IDs are not supported — you must use a short code or 10DLC long code.

## 10DLC — the US special case

The US introduced 10-Digit Long Code (10DLC) registration in 2021 to legitimise A2P long-code usage. Every 10DLC sender must register a brand and a campaign with The Campaign Registry; throughput then scales per the campaign's trust score (1 MPS up to 225 MPS). 10DLC is now the default A2P pattern for US destinations; alphanumeric is not an option. BroadNet handles 10DLC registration for customers sending to the US.

## Short code vs long code at a glance

| | Short code | Long code |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 3–6 digits | 10–12 digit MSISDN |
| Throughput | 100–500+ MPS | 1–10 MPS (throttled as anti-spam) |
| Best for | High-volume one-to-many campaigns | Two-way conversational / low volume |
| MO / replies | Sometimes (operator restrictions) | Always |
| Consumer recognition | High — reads as a brand | Low — looks like a personal number |
| Setup cost | High ($1,000–5,000 / month) | Low ($5–50 / month) |

## Frequently asked questions

### When should I use a short code?

For high-throughput, one-to-many A2P — marketing campaigns, voting, donations, premium SMS — where you need hundreds of messages per second and a number that visibly reads as a brand. The trade-off is high setup cost and per-message price.

### When is a long code the right choice?

For two-way conversational SMS (support, appointment replies) and low-volume A2P. Long codes always support inbound replies and are cheap to run, but operators throttle their throughput aggressively as an anti-spam measure.

### Where do alphanumeric sender IDs fit in?

In most of MENA, Europe, and APAC, a pre-registered alphanumeric sender ID (your brand name) is the dominant A2P pattern — neither short nor long code. It cannot receive MO replies and is not supported in the US.

### What is 10DLC and when do I need it?

10DLC (10-Digit Long Code) is the US registered A2P regime introduced in 2021. Every sender registers a brand and campaign with The Campaign Registry, and throughput scales with the campaign's trust score. It is the default A2P pattern for US destinations, where alphanumeric sender IDs are not an option.
