# What is number masking?

> Number masking (call and SMS anonymization) uses a temporary proxy number to connect two parties — a rider and driver, a buyer and seller — so neither sees the other's real number. The platform maps both real numbers to the proxy and relays calls and texts through it, protecting privacy and keeping the conversation on-platform for safety and auditability. It is built on DID numbers and programmable voice and SMS. See /answers/what-is-did and /answers/programmable-voice.
