# What is an MVNO?

> An MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) is a mobile service provider that sells its own branded plans but does not own a radio network — it buys access to a host operator's network at wholesale rates. The MVNO owns the brand, the customer relationship and usually the billing, while the host network carries the calls, data and messages.

## What is the difference between an MNO and an MVNO?

A mobile network operator (MNO) holds spectrum licences and runs both the radio access network and the core network. An MVNO rents capacity on that infrastructure. To subscribers the difference is mostly invisible: an MVNO SIM gets the host network's coverage under a different brand and price plan.

## What types of MVNO are there?

A branded reseller only markets and sells; the host runs everything else. A light MVNO adds its own billing and customer care. A full MVNO runs its own core elements — HLR or HSS, SMSC and often its own SIM range with its own network code — and uses only the host's radio network. An MVNE (mobile virtual network enabler) provides that back-office and core stack as a service to MVNOs that do not want to build it.

## How does A2P SMS reach MVNO subscribers?

The message always travels over the host's radio network, but the routing depends on the MVNO type. For a light MVNO the host operator's SMSC and A2P rules apply, so sender-ID registration and firewall policy follow the host. A full MVNO with its own SMSC and network code can be a separate termination point. A number lookup shows which network currently serves a number, which matters once numbers are ported.

## What does an MVNO need to launch?

Beyond the wholesale agreement: a messaging core, A2P monetisation with SMS firewalling, sender-ID governance, number-lookup and portability data, eSIM provisioning for digital onboarding and the wholesale routes underneath. BroadNet's MVNO stack supplies those layers — hosted SMSC, A2P monetisation with an inline firewall, sender-ID governance, HLR intelligence and eSIM enablement — on one platform.
