# What is MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)?

> MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is the carrier messaging standard that extends SMS to carry images, audio, video, and longer text. Messages transit an MMSC — rather than an SMSC — and are fetched by the handset over the data network. A2P MMS is used for rich marketing where supported, though RCS Business Messaging and WhatsApp increasingly replace it.
