# What is GTT (Global Title Translation)?

> GTT (Global Title Translation) is the SCCP-layer function that resolves a global title — a network address such as an E.164 or E.214 number — into the point code and subsystem number needed to route SS7 signaling to the right node: an HLR, SMSC, or MSC. Because senders address a global title rather than a physical point code, GTT is where operators (and SS7 firewalls) steer and screen inter-network SMS and MAP signaling. See /answers/ss7-global-title, /answers/what-is-sccp, and /operators/ss7-firewall.
