# What is a direct operator connection?

> A direct operator connection is an interconnect in which a messaging provider binds straight to a mobile operator's SMSC or A2P gateway under its own contract with that operator, instead of handing traffic to another aggregator. Each message takes one hop to the network that delivers it, which keeps latency, delivery receipts and pricing transparent.

## How is a direct connection different from an aggregator route?

On an indirect route a message can pass through two or three providers before it reaches the destination operator. Each hop adds latency and a margin, and each is another place where a delivery receipt can be lost or rewritten. A direct connection removes those hops: the provider holds the operator's commercial agreement, the technical bind — usually SMPP over a dedicated link or VPN — and the escalation path when something goes wrong.

## What does it take to set up a direct connection?

The operator signs an A2P interconnect agreement, agrees the permitted traffic types and sender-ID rules, allocates capacity and credentials and whitelists the provider's IP addresses. Both sides then test throughput, encoding and delivery receipts before production traffic flows. That is why direct coverage is built over years of operator relationships rather than added overnight.

## Why do direct routes matter for OTP and alerts?

Time-sensitive traffic suffers most on long routes: a one-time passcode that arrives late is useless. Grey routes — A2P traffic disguised as person-to-person to avoid termination fees — are increasingly blocked by operator SMS firewalls, so their messages disappear without a receipt. A direct, declared route is the one the operator expects, delivers and bills correctly.

## BroadNet's direct footprint

BroadNet delivers to 200+ countries over 1,000+ direct operator connections, and is connected directly to the operator in 86 of those countries. Elsewhere, traffic is carried over vetted partner routes, which are labelled as partner-managed rather than presented as direct.
