# What is A2P monetization?

> A2P monetization is the operator-side discipline of capturing wholesale revenue from application-to-person SMS traffic that would otherwise be delivered grey or peer-to-peer. It is one of the largest single SMS revenue streams for tier-1 operators globally — the A2P SMS market is worth USD 75-95 billion per year, and operators capture an increasing share through firewalls, direct agreements, and IR.71-aligned commercial frameworks.

## The leakage problem

Before A2P monetization programmes, operators typically captured only part of the A2P revenue that should have flowed to them. The rest leaked through grey routes (SIM boxes, foreign HLR abuse), through P2P-impersonating traffic, and through interconnect partners who undeclared A2P share. Closing this gap is the core economic motivation for every SMS firewall deployment.

## The three components

Detection (firewall classifies inbound SMS as A2P or P2P based on content, source, behavioural patterns). Enforcement (block, throttle, or whitelist-only — depending on policy). Commercial onboarding (the aggregators caught delivering grey-route A2P are offered an A2P agreement at the wholesale rate; either they accept and become a paying partner, or their traffic is permanently blocked). The third step is what converts firewall detection into recurring revenue.

## How much revenue comes back

It depends on the network: how much A2P traffic was arriving grey beforehand, and how disciplined the enforcement is. BroadNet does not publish a benchmark figure — the operator assessment measures the grey-route volume on your own traffic, in mirror mode, before anything is enforced, and the business case is built from that measurement.

## What operators should look for

A firewall vendor that also operates the commercial side — i.e. doesn't just detect grey traffic but actively onboards the offending aggregators into a legitimate agreement. BroadNet runs both products: the firewall and the A2P monetization desk. The combination is what closes the leak, not just measures it.
