# RCS vs MMS — what's the difference?

> MMS is the legacy multimedia messaging standard that attaches an image, audio, or video to a message over the carrier network; RCS Business Messaging is the modern successor that adds verified branding, interactive cards and buttons, suggested replies, and delivery and read receipts. MMS works on almost any phone as a heavier paid message; RCS works on supported Android and iOS 18+ devices and is far richer, with SMS/MMS as the fallback.

## What each carries

MMS carries a media file and up to ~1,600 characters but no interactivity or branding. RCS carries rich cards, carousels, quick-reply and action buttons, and a verified branded sender — an app-like experience in the native inbox.
