# OTP vs 2FA — what's the difference?

> An OTP (one-time password) and 2FA (two-factor authentication) are related but not the same: an OTP is a single-use code, while 2FA is the security model that requires two independent proofs of identity. An OTP is one common way to deliver the second factor, but 2FA can also use authenticator apps, security keys, or biometrics. OTP is a tool; 2FA is the goal.

## What an OTP is

An OTP is a short, single-use code — typically 4 to 8 digits — that is valid once and for a brief window. It is delivered to something the user has, most often by SMS, but also by WhatsApp, voice call, flash call, email, or generated locally by an authenticator app. Because it expires and cannot be reused, an OTP proves, at that moment, that the user controls the channel it was sent to.

- A single-use code, valid once and briefly.
- Delivered via SMS, WhatsApp, voice, flash call, email, or an app.
- Proves control of the channel it was sent to.
- Expiry + single use is what makes it 'one-time'.

## What 2FA is

Two-factor authentication requires two proofs from different categories: something you know (a password or PIN), something you have (a phone, a security key, an OTP), or something you are (a fingerprint or face). The whole point is independence — an attacker who steals your password still lacks the second factor. A password plus an SMS OTP is 2FA; two passwords are not, because they are the same factor type.

- Two factors from different categories: know / have / are.
- Password + SMS OTP = 2FA; password + PIN = not 2FA.
- Independence is the security property that matters.
- MFA generalises 2FA to two or more factors.

## How they relate

An OTP is frequently the 'something you have' factor in a 2FA setup — but it is only one option, and not the strongest. SMS OTP is vulnerable to phishing, SIM-swap, and SMS-pumping fraud, which is why guidance such as NIST SP 800-63B treats SMS as a restricted authenticator and why alternatives like flash-call, silent network authentication, authenticator apps, and hardware keys exist. You can have an OTP without 2FA (single-factor passwordless login by code) and 2FA without an OTP (password plus a fingerprint).

- OTP is usually the 'have' factor, but not the only one.
- SMS OTP is weaker than app-based or hardware factors.
- NIST SP 800-63B restricts SMS as an authenticator.
- OTP without 2FA and 2FA without OTP both exist.

## OTP vs 2FA at a glance

| | OTP | 2FA |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A single-use code | A two-factor security model |
| Scope | One authentication mechanism | A policy combining two factors |
| Examples | SMS code, voice code, app code | Password + OTP, password + fingerprint |
| Delivery / methods | SMS, WhatsApp, voice, flash call, app | Any two independent factor types |
| Relationship | Can be the second factor in 2FA | Can use an OTP, or not |

## Frequently asked questions

### Is an OTP the same as 2FA?

No. An OTP is a single-use code — one mechanism. 2FA is a model that requires two independent factors. An OTP is often used as one of those factors, but the terms describe different things.

### Is SMS OTP secure enough for 2FA?

It is far better than a password alone, but it is the weakest common second factor: it is exposed to phishing, SIM-swap, and SMS-pumping. For higher assurance, pair or replace it with flash-call, silent network authentication, an authenticator app, or a hardware security key.

### Can I use an OTP without 2FA?

Yes — passwordless login sends a code to your phone or email as the only factor. That is single-factor OTP authentication, not 2FA, because only one proof of identity is checked.
