# What is CPaaS, and how does it work?

> CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) is cloud software that exposes voice, SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, email, and verification as developer APIs — so a business can add communications to its own apps without contracting mobile operators directly. BroadNet is a MENA-native CPaaS operating since 2003, reaching 200+ countries over 1,000+ operator connections and carrying 300M+ messages a day.

## How a CPaaS works

Your application makes an HTTPS (or SMPP) call to the platform's API; the CPaaS handles carrier connectivity, number provisioning, message encoding, least-cost routing, regulatory compliance, and delivery-receipt handling, then streams status back via webhooks. The developer never touches an SMSC, an SS7 stack, or an operator contract — the platform abstracts all of it behind a REST endpoint and SDKs. See /platforms/cpaas and /answers/what-is-sms-api.

## The core components

Channel APIs (SMS, voice, WhatsApp, RCS, email, verification); SDKs and a REST/SMPP surface; phone-number and sender-ID provisioning; a routing and failover engine across operator connections; delivery receipts and webhooks; and dashboards for analytics, logs, and billing. Together they turn multi-operator telecom plumbing into a few API calls. See /answers/what-is-cpaas and /answers/what-is-omnichannel-messaging.

## CPaaS vs UCaaS vs CCaaS

CPaaS sells building-block APIs that developers embed in their own software. UCaaS (Unified Communications) sells a finished product — cloud phone system, meetings, chat — for internal collaboration. CCaaS (Contact Center) sells a finished agent-facing contact-centre suite. The distinction is programmability: CPaaS is the toolkit; UCaaS and CCaaS are the assembled applications, often built on top of a CPaaS. See /products/omnichannel.

## Benefits of building on a CPaaS

One integration reaches every operator and channel; pay-per-use billing instead of carrier contracts and minimum commits; new channels (add WhatsApp or RCS) without new plumbing; and built-in compliance, routing, and failover the platform maintains for you. It puts SMS, voice, and rich messaging on the same developer footing as any other API in your stack. See /products/sms-api, /products/voice, and /products/whatsapp-business-api.

## Limitations and what to evaluate

CPaaS quality varies on the things you cannot see from the API: route directness (are they on direct A2P routes or grey routes?), operator coverage in your target markets, deliverability and DLR fidelity, support responsiveness, and regulatory reach for sender-ID registration. A clean API in front of poor routes still delivers poorly — evaluate the network, not just the docs. See /answers/what-is-grey-route-sms and /answers/what-is-throughput-sla.

## Is CPaaS the same as an SMS aggregator?

Historically no: an SMS aggregator resold bulk SMS termination, while a CPaaS added voice, omnichannel, and developer APIs on top. Today the terms overlap — most CPaaS vendors are also aggregators, and aggregators have added CPaaS-style APIs. The useful test is breadth and programmability: a true CPaaS gives you multiple channels and real SDKs, not just an SMS HTTP endpoint. See /answers/what-is-a2p-sms.
