Lesson 01

## What RCS is

RCS — Rich Communication Services — is the GSMA's upgrade to the native SMS/MMS experience, turning the phone's default messaging app into a rich, interactive channel. The GSMA RCS Universal Profile is the standard that unifies operator implementations so a single message behaves consistently across networks and devices that support it.

For businesses, the relevant flavour is RCS Business Messaging (RBM), delivered through a Messaging-as-a-Platform (MaaP) infrastructure operated by carriers. A business connects to MaaP through an agent, and messages reach subscribers in their native inbox — no app install required, unlike over-the-top channels.

The defining trait of RCS is that it degrades gracefully. Where RCS is unavailable — an unsupported device, carrier, or setting — the message is designed to fall back to SMS, so reach is never lost, only richness. That fallback behaviour is what makes RCS practical to adopt without abandoning universal SMS delivery.

Lesson 02

## Rich cards and interactive messaging

RCS replaces 160 characters of plain text with structured, visual content. A rich card combines an image or video, a title, a description, and tappable buttons in a single message; a carousel strings several cards together for browsing — a product catalogue, a set of appointment slots, a menu of options.

Interactivity comes from suggested replies and suggested actions. A suggested reply is a chip the user taps to send a canned response (keeping the conversation structured and reducing free-text ambiguity); a suggested action triggers a device capability — dial a number, open a map, add a calendar event, or open a URL — directly from the message.

The channel also supports read receipts and typing indicators, so a business sees when a message was read and the user sees the conversation is live. Designed well, this turns a one-way notification into a two-way flow — a booking confirmed, rescheduled, and paid without leaving the messaging app.

Lesson 03

## Verified senders and trust

The standout trust feature of RCS Business Messaging is the verified sender. Instead of an anonymous short code or a spoofable alphanumeric ID, a business appears as a branded agent — a verified name, logo, brand colour, and a checkmark — that the ecosystem has vetted before it can send.

This matters directly against fraud. Sender-ID spoofing and smishing rely on messages that appear to come from a trusted brand; a cryptographically anchored, ecosystem-verified sender identity is far harder to impersonate than a plain sender string, so users can trust that a message genuinely comes from the brand it claims.

Verification is a gate, not a formality: brands are onboarded and reviewed before an agent goes live, which is part of why RCS traffic carries higher trust and engagement than raw SMS. For regulated senders, that verified identity is a compliance asset as much as a marketing one.

Lesson 04

## WhatsApp Business as a rich channel

RCS is not the only rich channel, and a serious messaging strategy pairs it with WhatsApp Business, which reaches users across Android and iOS through the WhatsApp app. It supports rich media, buttons, list messages, and read receipts, with its own verified business profiles.

WhatsApp is governed by rules that shape how you use it. A 24-hour customer-service window opens when a user messages your business, during which you may reply free-form; outside it, business-initiated messages must use pre-approved template messages, and conversations are priced by category. An orchestration must know whether that window is open before selecting WhatsApp for a given message.

The practical view is that RCS and WhatsApp are complementary rich channels with different reach and rules — RCS native in the default messaging app where carriers support it, WhatsApp dominant among its large installed base. A platform that exposes both behind one API lets you pick the best-fit channel per user and market rather than betting on one.

Lesson 05

## Channel fallback and orchestration

Rich channels shine only when the user is reachable on them, so rich messaging is really an orchestration problem: choose the best available channel per message and fall back gracefully when it is not deliverable. The universal safety net beneath everything remains SMS, which works when nothing richer does.

A fallback waterfall is an ordered, time-boxed sequence of attempts — for a marketing notification you might try RCS, then WhatsApp, then SMS; each step waits for a delivery signal before deciding it succeeded and escalating. The waterfall must respect each channel's eligibility rules (RCS availability, the WhatsApp window, sender-ID registration) and must never deliver the same content twice across channels, which wastes spend and confuses the user.

Instrumenting delivery rate, latency, and conversion per channel and per market feeds the orchestration so it learns which order works where. A platform that unifies RCS, WhatsApp, SMS, voice, and email behind one API — such as BroadNet's omnichannel and RCS messaging products — is what makes this practical to run at carrier scale.

Key takeaways

- RCS (GSMA Universal Profile, delivered via MaaP) makes the native messaging app rich, with graceful SMS fallback.
- Rich cards, carousels, suggested replies and actions turn one-way alerts into structured two-way conversations.
- Verified senders give a vetted, branded identity that resists the spoofing and smishing plain SMS invites.
- Treat rich messaging as orchestration: a time-boxed fallback waterfall across RCS, WhatsApp, and SMS.
